Google Search Console Verification

My dear readers, in this article we will be learning about how to add your blog/ website to Google search console for ownership verification. Google search console is a service provided by Google and it is also known as Webmaster tool. In order to make your contents and articles appear in the search results, we use this tool.

After verifying your site on Google, you will be able to submit a sitemap of your website or blog to Google webmaster tool or Google search console. Submitting a sitemap is important to rank your articles in search results. A sitemap is a file that contains link of all the contents of your website and by submitting this file, you are allowing Google or other search engines to crawl and index your website or blog contents.

After you submit this file to Google, you don’t need to submit the URLs of your newly created articles frequently as sitemap will take care of all those things then.

How to verify your blog/ website in the Google search console?

To use all the features and apps of Google, your 1 Gmail account is enough. Go through the following steps without skipping any of them to verify your site ownership properly.

Step 1: Go to Webmaster Tools and sign in using your Gmail account.

Step 2: After signing in, you need to add your website address in the new domain section and hit  "Continue" tab. (Use this format: "www.learn-to-travel.blogspot.com" ). Don't use https:// or / after the address. (For other domains, use "www.example.com")
If you have created the Blogspot blog using the same Gmail account that you have used to sign in to Webmaster Tool/ Google search console, then just after clicking the continue button your free Blogspot site is auto verified. This is so because, Blogspot blog is an affiliate product of Google and by using the same Gmail account for both Webmaster tool and Blogspot blog, you have autoconfirmed the site is yours.

In other cases, if you want to verify another blog using different Gmail account, then on your Webmaster Search console dashboard, find the drop-down arrow on the top left area that shows "Add a property" option.
Click on "Add a Property" option and enter your site address on the URL prefix section as shown under. If your domain is not a Blogspot blog, then don't use the left option. The right option allows verification using multiple alternatives.
Use this format: "https://www.learn-to-travel.blogspot.com" in the address section and click on continue.

There are multiple options of verification after you click on "continue", and I am going to show three easy methods among all.

A. Recommended method:
The first option is the recommended method. For Blogspot users, this method is not recommended because you won't have Cpanel options in Blogspot. So, for other custom domain owners, this method works well. You will get an HTML file (Googlexxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.html) and you need to download this file in your laptop. Place it on your desktop for easy location.

Then go to your Cpanel file manager. Upload that file on the root section of your file manager. If you host multiple domains with the same host, then search for "Public_html" folder. Upload that file under this folder and navigate to search console window and click on verify.
(Use the HTML tag method for Blogspot blogs)

B. HTML tag:
Copy the HTML tag from the alternative options of verifying site.
Navigate to your Blogspot dashboard. Click on Themes >> Edit HTML. Use "Control +F" to find the closing head tag "</head>". Paste the code just above this tag and save theme. After that, navigate to your Search console window and click on Verify > Done.

C. Associating the DNS Record:
This is another method of verification if you are unable to verify using the above two methods. This method is also only applicable if you are using a custom domain. To verify your site ownership in Webmaster tools using this method, you need to copy the TXT verification code that you are provided as follows:
Copy the code and on the next window of your browser, log in to your domain name provider service. Then click on Domain >> My domains >> DNS settings.

Then in DNS management, Paste the code in Address section as Record type SPF (TXT). In the Host Name section, type in '@' and click on save changes as shown in the screenshot below.
Navigate to your Search Console window and click on Verify/ Done. That is all. We have verified our site to webmaster tools successfully using TXT records.

Submitting a sitemap to Webmaster Tools/ Google search console.

After you have successfully verified your website/ blog in webmaster tools, then another important thing you need to do for SEO is submitting a sitemap to the Webmaster tool. In order to do that, go to your Search console dashboard and on the left section, click on "sitemap".
Then you will be provided a space to insert your sitemap address. In that space, type in "sitemap.xml" and click on "submit". As easy as that.

If that doesn't work, then try "index_sitemap.xml" or "sitemap_index.xml". If that does not work, then your website/ blog has not generated a sitemap yet. That might be because you don't have a single post on your blog/ website.

If you already have multiple posts and still the above methods aren't working, then you need to generate a sitemap for your website. To generate a sitemap, try one of these free sitemap generator websites and submit those sitemaps to Webmaster Tools.
I hope that helps. Did you find this article useful? Please share it to your social profiles.
